Die ausgezeichneten Geburtsfotos aus dem letzten Jahr!
IAPBP Image Competition 2022
It´s that time of the year…
Nein, hier ist nicht Weihnachten gemeint. Obgleich es sich für viele der Gewinner*innen des jährlichen Geburtsfotografie Wettbewerbs der International Association of Professional Birth Photographers ein wenig so anfühlen dürfte.
Wenig verwunderlich also, dass es mich mit großer Dankbarkeit, mitunter leichter Ungläubigkeit und auch ein bisschen Stolz erfüllt, neben all diesen phantastischen Kolleg*innen ausgezeichnet worden zu sein. Dieses Jahr in der Kategorie Best of Delivery – Fine Art, im letzten Jahr erhielt eins meiner Bilder mit einem Member´s Choice Award, ebenfalls in der Kategorie Delivery, eine ganz besondere Auszeichnung von den Kolleg*innen aus aller Welt.
Obgleich ich dieser Art von Wettbewerben innerlich etwas gespalten gegenüber stehe – können sie neben einem wunderbaren Zugehörigkeitsgefühl und dem schönen Hintergrund, etwas dazu beizutragen Geburt sichtbar(er) zu machen leider auch wenig hilfreiche Vergleichs-Gedanken befeuern – ist es eine große Ehre und auch tolle Wertschätzung, dass dadurch neben den wichtigen Inhalten die Arbeit von uns Geburtsfotograf*innen international Aufmerksamkeit und Wertschätzung erfährt.
A propos Wertschätzung: Es ist mir ein großes Anliegen euch, liebe Besucher*innen dieses Blogs, dazu zu ermuntern, euch auf der Seite des Wettbewerbs nicht nur die ausgezeichneten Bilder anzuschauen, sondern unbeirrt weiter zu scrollen um zur Galerie aller eingereichten Bilder zu gelangen.
Es kann ob der großen Menge vielleicht erst mal abschreckend wirken, sich hier weiter umzuschauen – aber ich verspreche ihr werdet staunen, was ihr dort für großartige Aufnahmen findet!
Es wurden in diesem Jahr 895 Bilder von Fotograf*innen aus 24 verschiedenen Ländern eingereicht bei der (oder dem…?) Birth Photography Image Competition des IAPBP. Und wenn ihr mich fragt, verdiente davon locker die Hälfte der Aufnahmen eine Auszeichnung.
{ Vielleicht werde ich im Nachgang zu diesem Blog noch ein paar Aufnahmen einfügen, die leider keinen Award gewonnen, aber mich sehr begeistert haben. Also… ein paar davon. 😉 }
In diesem Sinne möchte ich allen ausgezeichneten Fotograf*innen von Herzen gratulieren!
Natürlich allen, deren Arbeit in diesem Jahr von der Fachjury oder den Kolleg*innen prämiert wurde. Und ebenso denjenigen, deren ausgezeichnete Arbeit in diesem Jahr keinen Platz belegt hat. Vielleicht sogar ganz knapp. Es gehört Mut dazu, sich dieser Wettbewerbs-Situation zu stellen und am Ende des Tages ist es wie mit allem Menschlichen: eine ziemlich subjektive Angelegenheit.
Und eines ist allen Kolleg*innen gemein – der Mut, die Leidenschaft und der ganz persönliche Blick, der unsere Arbeit zu dem macht, was sie ist: etwas Wunderschönes.

It’s that time of the year…
No, this is not Christmas. Although for many of the winners of the annual birth photography competition of the International Association of Professional Birth Photographers it might feel a bit like that.
Since I started working as a birth photographer in 2016, I have marveled at the winning – and submitted – images of this global photography competition every year, and also at the encouraging growth in this genre. Both the growth in the number of photographers offering birth photography and the growth in quality. My mouth was already open many times in the first years because of these impressive shots, now it has almost become a kind of permanent condition and it sometimes feels almost a bit silly to constantly throw around superlatives when trying to describe what I see.
Little wonder then that it fills me with great gratitude, sometimes slight disbelief and also pride to be awarded alongside all these fantastic colleagues. This year in the category Best of Delivery – Fine Art, last year one of my images received a Member’s Choice Award, also in the category Delivery, a very special award from the colleagues from all over the world.
Although I am a little bit divided about this kind of competitions – besides a wonderful feeling of belonging and the nice background to make birth (more) visible , they can unfortunately also stir up little helpful feelings of comparison – it is a great honor and also great appreciation that in addition to the important content, the work of us birth photographers receives international attention and appreciation.
Speaking of appreciation: I would like to encourage you, dear visitors of this blog, not only to have a look at the awarded pictures on the contest page, but also to scroll down to the gallery of all submitted pictures.
It may seem daunting to look around at first, but I promise you will be amazed at the great images you will find there! This year, 895 images were submitted by photographers from 24 different countries to the IAPBP’s Birth Photography Image Competition. And if you ask me, easily half of those shots deserved an award.
{ Maybe in the aftermath of this blog I’ll include a few shots that unfortunately didn’t win an award, but really excited me. So… a few of them 😉 }
On that note, I’d like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to all of the winning photographers!
Of course, to all those whose work was awarded by the professional jury or colleagues this year. And also to those whose excellent work did not take a place this year. Maybe even by a very narrow margin. It takes courage to face this competition situation and at the end of the day it is like everything human: a rather subjective matter.
And there is one thing that all our colleagues have in common – the courage, the passion and the very personal view that makes our work what it is: something beautiful.
